Hi, my name is Charles, I have been in Moscow for a few months

On working to realise your dream

I always loved to watch car races on television, but getting into it myself never occurred to me before I turned 18 and travelled to the US to enrol in a university there. I would hit vacant superstore parking lots to practice my drift technique, and I had the chance drive on tortuous mountain roads all night to hone my driving prowess. Then, with the support of some local sponsors, I competed in a race and won. From then on, I never looked back, never had a doubt in my mind that I was on the right track.

On parents and fans

Initially, I got neither understanding nor support from my parents. I was good at math, was a good student overall. I enrolled in a US university to study mathematics and economics, and I graduated. Only to devote myself entirely to racing. My parents' first reaction was ambiguous. But now they are my greatest fans, they always try to watch my events live, especially when I'm in the Russian Drift Series.

I love my job because I get to travel the world and meet amazing people.

On idols

Bruce Lee is my hero. He is the iconic Chinese martial arts master. Bruce Lee inspired me to cultivate my own style and be myself. I would like to make a difference in the world, but do so my way.

When you're a race car pilot, a lot depends on your mindset and consistency. And you need to be resilient to pressure, you can't panic in the middle of a race. You also need a natural talent for it.

Оn speed

I was born in Hong Kong, a major metropolis. It's a beautiful place with its own, incredibly fast pace. Everyone is in a hurry all the time, people walk very fast. Very! I like small towns better. I like tranquillity. I get enough speed on the track.

On the other hand, a big city always has a lot to offer. I like how big cities have a mind of their own. They are made up of new technologies, new ideas and palpable progress you can really witness before your eyes.

On Moscow fashion

The first thing I do in a new city is to check out how people look, what they wear, what style seems to be prevalent. The people of Moscow are sharp dressers. The city has class.

In Moscow, the parks are surprisingly beautiful and well-kept. Moscow is a lot greener than my hometown. Few of my friends have been to Moscow, so I get the chance to tell them how cool this city is.

On my home away from home

I first went to Moscow to get together with my racing team. I did not think of it as travel — it was a business trip. But my friend and team leader took me to lots of great places in Moscow. We went to the Zoo, took walks in the parks and went to a few museums. Now, apart from the fact that I work here, Moscow is a home away from home for me. Moscow gives me plenty of energy to recuperate between competitions.

On associations

Muscovites are very busy, but they're always friendly. Never hesitate to ask for help here when you need it. Local people will help you out, give you directions and explain things. The Metro is plainly signposted and accessible to foreigners, there are English translations and even some Chinese ones.

To me, Moscow is like a 1960s vintage race car: it has its unique history, its own mysteries, and it is super fast.

The special Muscovites project is dedicated to the heroes of our city: ordinary people with their own views on Moscow. You can meet them in a café, on the street, at the theatre or the supermarket. Perhaps, you sat across from their table, stood in the same queue or were on the same bus late to work just yesterday. Muscovites, let's get acquainted.
