A selection of unusual selfie locations in Moscow

Wondering where in Moscow you can take an unusual selfie during the summer? We've handpicked a number of picturesque locations where you can take amazing photos: flying in the air, bird's-eye view shots, photographs on the swings, in historic estates or against the works of street art — these won't leave even the most discerning bloggers indifferent.

Mosfilm Studio

A great pick for unusual selfies and themed photoshoots are the Mosfilm set designs inside the film studio's museum.

They recreate the atmosphere of the 19th century Moscow and are often transformed into old Berlin, Paris and other European capitals.

Here you will get to see famous automobiles that starred in popular films, original costumes and decorations, studios, makeup, as well as photo and video equipment.

The museum is located on the premises of the Mosfilm group in the west of Moscow. Pre-booking of tours is required.

Where: 1 Mosfilmovskaya Street, bldg. 21

Skypark Moscow extreme park

Looking for some adventure and a picture in the air? Head over to the newly opened Skypark Moscow extreme park in the Sparrow Hills and try out the new Zipline amusement ride, in other words, a modern-day rope swing. The zip line is 700 metres long and a full trip at 60 km/h takes one minute. The ride is totally safe, but there are weight limitations: 40 to 110 kg. You can buy tickets at the ticket office or book them online in advance.

Booking your ticket in advance will save you the time of waiting in queue.

Important: make sure to arrive 30 minutes in advance to have enough time to exchange your ticket for a boarding pass and go through the registration procedure.

Where: Sparrow Hills

Moscow Cable Car

From the Sparrow Hills, you can also take beautiful pictures against the picturesque embankment of Moskva River, the Luzhniki sports complex and the high-risers of the Moscow-City Business Centre by taking a trip on the Moscow Cable Car.

A trip above the ground surrounded by breathtaking views will leave you with a ton of positive emotions and photographs, and also double as a full-on city tour. You can start your trip either at the Sparrow Hills or the Luzhniki station.

Enclosed passenger cabins are cosy and fit up to 8 persons each; they are equipped with digital screens, an audio guide in 4 languages and LED lighting. The entire trip is 737 m long.

Where: 28 Kosygina Street

A bird's eye view

If you aren't afraid of heights, observation platforms can become your perfect photoshoot locations. One of the options is to visit the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Sparrow Hills, offering panoramic views of Moscow. Here you can take photos of the Russian capital from every angle, everywhere you turn. By the way, if you're looking for a place with a wonderful romantic atmosphere, make sure to visit this location during the sunset.

Another good option is the observation platform of the Moscow State University offering tours that need to be booked in advance. Finally, you can head over to the Moscow-City complex and visit the highest observation platform in Europe, the PANORAMA360. Here you can take selfies against picturesque Moscow locations, as well as try out different desserts.

Where: 14 Leninsky Prospect.

Gorky Park

In Gorky Park, you can take a selfie in motion on the multi-functional Mega-Swings — a complex with 29 swings with different swinging and rotation modes and dynamic lighting during the nighttime.

The Mega-Swings were installed in 2018; they are part of the Salut playground that unites nine different spaces for games and creative activities. Here you can take an interesting selfie, play with sand and water, discover the nature of sound and colour, and learn more about the shapes and textures of different objects.

The playground boasts facilities for all types of games: adventure games, object games, physical, semi-extreme and experimental games. Different play areas cater to all senses.

Where: 9 Krymsky Val Street.

Khodynka Field

To feel like you're flying over Moscow, try out the giant swing in the park at Khodynka Field. The amusement ride is set up on top of a 10-metre hill which offers a stunning view of the city.

The design of the swing is in line with the aviation theme of the park: the steel construction features red-and-white windsocks that are normally used in airfields. This theme has been picked for a reason: between 1910 and 2003, Khodynka Field was home to the Central Airfield named after M. V. Frunze: what used to be its taxiway strip has now become the central alley of Moscow's new park.

The park also has an art object titled the Mirror Maze where you can capture yourself from an interesting angle using the play of light and shadow.

Where: Khodynsky Boulevard

Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

If you want to visit St. Petersburg and take selfies with historical buildings but you don't have the time for that — come and visit the Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve.

The gothic style of royal palaces, magnificent bridges, parks with all the necessary facilities and a singing fountain — there are plenty of photoshoot opportunities in the area. The fountain actually has over 900 jets located along the circumference of 12 concentric rings; the water rises as high as 15 metres above the ground. The rhythm of the fountain located on the Podkova Island in Tsaritsyno Pond is controlled remotely, and the water is dancing to the accompanying music.

Where: 1 Dolskaya Street, bldg. 6

Vorontsovo Estate

The historic Vorontsovo Estate is not only an important example of historical architecture but also a popular walking area. In search of beautiful selfie locations, you will come across picturesque landscapes and breathtaking historic buildings.

You can take pictures in an old garden, a park labyrinth or against red-and-white buildings and the orangery representing the typical 18th-century style.

Here you can also visit the Chinese garden. It's a small and cosy area with a wooden fence to mark the borders of the miniature 'park within a park'. The Chinese-style summer-houses are perfect for doing yoga or just relaxing.

Where: 3 Vorontsovo Park.

The Space Pavilion

Imagine you are an astronaut, feel the vastness of our endless universe, fly through the Solar System and take a selfie in the open space — all without leaving the mirror room of the Cosmonautics and Aviation centre in pavilion No. 34 Space at VDNH.

Thanks to the mirrors all around the room and numerous lights reflected in them, you will feel like you're floating in space surrounded by millions of stars. In addition, the museum boasts 120 unique units of aircraft and space equipment, exhibits from the defence industry, rare archival documents, photographs and video materials dedicated to the history of space achievements.

Where: 119 Mira Prospect, bldg. 34

Art spaces

If you're trying to take a creative selfie, a good idea is to do so against the works of street art. You can find some amazing locations in Moscow's art spaces.

For instance, Mickey Mouse fans should head over to the premises of the ARTPLAY design centre (10 Nizhnyaya Syromyatnicheskaya Street, bldg. 2).

For a selfie with a graffiti portrait of Vladimir Mayakovsky, visit the Krasny Oktyabr art space (6 Bersenevskaya Embankment, bldg. 1).

And the lovers of unusual graffiti should take a walk along the Flacon design area or the Khlebozavod art space (36 Bolshaya Novodmitrovskaya Street).
