'A Tram Driver Should Know Everything'

Nikolay Movchan, tram driver on Route 17, talks about his work, his favourite places in Moscow, and shares some personal stories

In honour of Moscow Transport Day, we interviewed some real heroes — the people who drive us around every day, who help make our capital the best city on Earth.

How long have you been working here? Why did you choose this profession?

I've been working as a tram driver at the Nikolay Bauman Tram Depot since 2001. Before that, I'd work for the railroad, which is why I decided to pursue a career in rail transport when deciding on my next job. This is the field that appeals most to me.

Have there been any interesting or funny situations involving your job or your passengers?

One time when I was on a route, an extremely agitated passenger ran inside at a tram stop and rushed up to me asking, 'What time does the train for Oryol depart?' When I told him that I didn't know, he was very surprised. He said, 'How come? You're a tram driver, you should know everything!'.
